Volunteer Graphic Designer

Graphic Designer — Volunteer | The Toronto Local Charity

Team: Marketing & Communications

Location: Remote (virtual), based in Canada

Commitment: Minimum 5 hrs/week; most volunteers contribute 10–15 hrs weekly

The Toronto Local Charity (TLC) is a volunteer-run Canadian registered non-profit devoted to creating diverse leaders of tomorrow. Through our program brand, Success Accelerator, we deliver free programs across three pillars: elevating mental health, building essential life skills, and enabling access to technology.

The Opportunity

We've recently unveiled a new brand identity and are preparing to launch a social media presence that drives real engagement and supports fundraising. We need a skilled Graphic Designer to bring this visual identity to life — across our social channels, program materials, and campaign assets.

This is a foundational role. You won't be stepping into a fully built creative machine — you'll be helping build it. That means creating the initial library of branded templates, designing the first batch of social media assets before we begin posting, and establishing visual systems the broader team can use over time.

What You'll Be Working On

  • Design branded social media graphics across five content categories (impact stats, participant stories, testimonials, community activities, and donation/CTA posts).
  • Create approximately 12 launch-ready assets before our social campaign goes live.
  • Build reusable Canva templates for the team.
  • Update existing materials with the new brand across print and digital.
  • Support fundraising initiatives including our various campaigns.
  • Organize a brand asset library for easy team access.

Your Team

You'll be part of a three-person Marketing & Communications team alongside a Content Strategist & Copywriter (who owns the editorial calendar and coordinates the team's workflow) and a Community Manager (who builds relationships and engagement across our social platforms). You'll receive creative direction and briefs from the Content Strategist, and the Community Manager's engagement insights will help inform what visual content resonates with the community.

A Note on Static vs. Motion Design

This role is focused on static design. If you also have motion/animation skills, that's a wonderful bonus — but not expected. We may recruit separately for motion content as our social presence grows.

Qualifications

  • Believing in our cause is mandatory 😃
  • Proficient in Canva (our primary design platform) — able to create templates and maintain brand consistency.
  • Adobe Creative Suite is an asset but not required.
  • Understanding of brand rollouts and maintaining consistency during transitions.
  • Ability to work with existing brand elements (logo files, hex codes, Google Fonts).
  • Strong async communication skills (we use Slack and Monday.com).
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple updates simultaneously.
  • Understanding of both print and digital design requirements.
  • Portfolio or samples showing brand implementation, template design, or social media content preferred.

What to Expect

We're a small, collaborative team where every contribution is visible and valued. You'll have real creative ownership — not just executing briefs, but shaping how our organization looks and feels to the outside world. This is a volunteer-run organization — we're looking for someone who works independently, communicates proactively, and adapts as priorities shift.

This is a volunteer position. No financial compensation is offered.
