Remote Visual Merchandising Designer (Beauty) -- 20 - 30 hours per week
Position Overview
We are seeking a Visual Merchandising Designer to create compelling in-store and omni-channel retail experiences for a beauty brand. The role combines graphic design and retail merchandising to drive customer engagement and sales through thoughtfully designed displays, signage, and packaging graphics. You will collaborate with merchandising, marketing, store operations, and vendors to develop seasonal campaigns, planograms, and point-of-sale materials that maintain brand standards and respond to retail performance insights. This role is approximately 75% visual merchandising and 25% general graphic design, supporting a wide range of retail and brand initiatives.
This is a remote freelance role starting ASAP through at least the end of June (20 hours a week with the ability to flex up to 40 as needed).
Key Responsibilities
- Design and deliver creative visual merchandising concepts, display systems, and point-of-sale graphics for beauty retail environments.
- Produce high-quality graphic assets using Adobe Creative Suite for signage, packaging, temporary displays, and promotional materials.
- Develop planograms, floor sets, and fixture layouts that optimize product placement and customer flow across store footprints.
- Create detailed production-ready artwork and technical specs; collaborate with vendors and production partners to ensure accurate implementation.
- Partner with buying, marketing, and store operations to execute seasonal rollouts, new product launches, and promotional campaigns on schedule.
- Maintain and enforce brand guidelines across all visual touchpoints, ensuring consistency in messaging, color, typography, and imagery.
- Analyze sales and store performance data to refine visual strategies and iterate on successful displays to improve conversion and average ticket.
- Manage multiple projects and timelines, prioritize work across concurrent initiatives, and provide clear status updates to stakeholders.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Merchandising, Retail Design, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 3+ years of professional experience in visual merchandising or retail design, with demonstrated work in the beauty category.
- Strong graphic design skills with advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign) and production-ready artwork creation.
- Proven knowledge of retail fixtures, planogram creation, store sets, and point-of-sale production processes.
- Strong understanding of shopper navigation, fixtures, and retail display systems (e.g., inline fixtures, gondolas, end caps, free-standing displays, trays, towers).
- Must have experience with dielines and be comfortable reviewing and providing feedback on print proofs.
- Ability to work quickly, pivot easily, and maintain a collaborative, goodnatured approach.
- Excellent communication, vendor management, and project management skills, with the ability to meet deadlines and manage budgets.
- A portfolio showcasing retail display design, packaging/graphics, and completed store implementations is required.
- Nice to have: direct experience with Ulta retail programs or other major beauty retailer partnerships.
