Overview:
- The Design Studio is a horizontal support group that provides design support across all verticals β Mail, Search, News, Commerce, etc.
- The teamβs remit includes translating brand guidelines into product-level design standards (type, color, illustration, iconography, etc.) and maintaining consistency across products.
- The open role will focus heavily on Product Design Documentation β ensuring design principles and components are clearly defined, visually represented, and accessible for designers and engineers.
- Design Studio is a multidisciplinary design team responsible for crafting the visual and experiential identity of products.
- The team collaborates across product design, brand design, production, and engineering to build cohesive, accessible, and delightful experiences.
Role Focus
- Core responsibility: Create, document, and systematize design guidelines and principles in collaboration with design studio, central design, product vertical designers and the Design System team.
- The designer should be a hands-on product designer with strong documentation and storytelling skills.
- Expected to build documentation systems from scratch, incorporating existing materials and upgrading them into unified, shareable formats.
- The documentation should be useful, engaging, and instructive, not just a repository of guidelines.
- This role supports the Design Studio team by maintaining and evolving the documentation and guidelines that define design system and creative standards.
- It ensures design consistency, clarity, and scalability across all products and platforms.
Key team goals:
- Maintain and evolve unified design system.
- Ensure brand and product consistency across experiences.
- Provide accessible, scalable design documentation for cross-functional teams.
- Support product designers and engineers with well-documented standards and guidelines.
Key projects or initiatives for the role:
- Maintain and evolve design documentation system.
- Build and refine the Webflow-based documentation hub.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to improve component library adoption.
- Support internal design communication and enablement efforts.
Primary responsibilities (daily/weekly):
- Develop clear, visually appealing design documentation (colors, typography, components, usage guides).
- Collaborate closely with brand designers, illustrators, product designers, and design system engineers.
- Ensure alignment between brand identity and product execution.
- Create examples and demos that show correct application of design principles.
- Maintain strong collaboration with Accessibility and Content teams to ensure inclusive and consistent experiences.
- Develop, organize, and maintain design documentation in Figma and Webflow.
- Create and update reference materials for product, brand, typography, and motion design.
- Partner with designers to translate design principles into clear, usable guidelines.
- Manage and evolve design documentation portals and component libraries.
- Ensure alignment with accessibility and usability best practices.
- Conduct periodic audits of documentation for consistency and accuracy.
Must-have skills/qualifications (technical, soft skills, certifications, tools):
- Figma β Must be highly proficient; primary design tool.
- Webflow β Required; used for building and hosting documentation sites.
- Strong foundation in Product Design, Visual Design, Typography, and System Thinking.
- Demonstrated experience with design systems and documentation.
- Strong storytelling and visual presentation skills.
- Portfolio demonstrating both product design work and design documentation examples
- Strong visual and written communication skills.
- Understanding of design systems, accessibility, and usability best practices.
- Experience with motion design, illustration, or brand expression.
- Understanding of front-end design translation for engineers.
- Experience in enterprise, tech, or media environments preferred, but open to other industries.
Ideal experience level (years, leadership, industries):
- 2β5 years in design systems, documentation, or UX design roles. Experience in large-scale tech or digital product environments preferred.
- Senior-level designer with proven product deployment experience.
- Not a junior or entry-level documentation role.
- Freelance experience is acceptable if relevant and demonstrates the required expertise
