About The Role
We are seeking a highly experienced Staff Product Designer specializing in HR Experiences to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of Gusto’s HR capabilities by designing conversational UI and messaging experiences that foster meaningful interactions between small business owners and their employees. You will take ownership of a significant segment of Gusto’s product, influencing every stage from conceptualization to deployment and refinement of AI-enabled features. Your work will directly impact how users engage with Gusto’s platform, making complex HR processes more accessible and intuitive through innovative design solutions.
This is a unique opportunity to work within a newly formed product area dedicated to providing proactive, AI-powered guidance for small businesses. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, product management, and data science, to develop scalable, user-centered solutions that enhance the overall user experience and support Gusto’s strategic vision. Your expertise will help bridge the gap between technology and human-centric design, ensuring that our conversational AI tools are both effective and engaging for diverse user groups.
Qualifications
- 8+ years of experience in product design, with a focus on conversational UI, messaging platforms, or AI-driven customer support experiences
- Proven experience designing cross-platform conversational AI experiences for internal tools, consumer-facing CX/support, or AI-enabled applications
- Strong portfolio demonstrating user flows, workflows, and interaction design for complex products
- Experience scaling early-stage products in B2B or B2C environments, particularly within Series B-C startups or mid-stage growth companies (2→10 employees)
- Excellent research skills and customer empathy, with a background in designing tools that connect people, especially in gig economy or concierge service contexts
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and refine scope as user base scales, balancing immediate needs with long-term vision
- Familiarity with service design methods such as journey mapping and blueprinting to align stakeholders and inform strategic decisions
- Strong collaboration and communication skills, capable of working independently and cross-functionally to drive alignment and execution
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and refine conversational UI and messaging experiences across web and mobile platforms to enhance user engagement
- Leverage data-driven insights and user research to inform design decisions and improve product experiences
- Engage with customers, especially in the gig economy, to understand their needs and create tools that foster connection and trust
- Collaborate with engineering, product, and data teams to iterate on AI-enabled customer support and concierge features
- Ensure designs align with Gusto’s strategic vision while maintaining scalability for both early adoption and broader market reach
- Balance strategic planning with tactical execution, contributing to product roadmaps and iterative development cycles
- Participate in service design activities, including journey mapping and blueprinting, to drive stakeholder alignment and strategic planning
